return to australia gallery Australia Uluru / Ayer's Rock at sunset with desert photo

Part of what makes Uluru (Ayer's Rock) so dramatic is that it's almost completely surrounded by unremarkable desert plains as far as the eye can see. The center of Australia is a fairly flat pancake, and then all of a sudden here's the hull of this Martian jellomold spaceship sticking up 350 meters from the scrub. And just like an iceberg, two-thirds of the rock is believed to still be buried under the sand. I can assure you the slow looming approach of the sacred stone over your vehicle is suitably intimidating.
