If you've heard anything about Angkor Thom, you've heard about the Bayon. Probably the most popular destination outside the main Angkor Wat complex, the Bayon is the structure swathed in 200+ faces, the HUGE serene smiles of Avalokiteshvara angled in all four compass points to the distant horizon. The legend is that the faces of Bayon gazed to all small corners of the Kingdom, a palpable symbol for the reach of the rulers of Angkor. It amazes me that you can compare an 800 year-old stone carving and an 8 year-old girl and realize they look like close relatives.
