When people discovered I was from the USA, usually their eyes became very large and they were eager to chat with me about politics. Most Americans don't realize Cuba has no restrictions on incoming travel - they welcome Europeans, Canadians, Latin Americans, the whole world, including Americans. Largely because the Cuban economy and government desperately need the tourist dollar. But America forbids its own citizens to travel to Cuba, specifically to spend money there. About 90 percent of the people I spoke with in Cuba were anti-Communism and resented the control and meddling of the leftist system. But a good 10 percent were old guard - usually seasoned men who had been, in some way, involved in the Revolution or had directly benefitted from it - and they were anxious to express to me all the positives Castro had manifested for their country. There's no doubt Cuba has one of the best educational and health care systems in Latin America. But these advantages come at a great cost.
