One of the tenets of a communist system is that all citizens are "equal" in terms of worth. At least when it comes to salary. So no matter whether you're a janitor or a brain surgeon, as a Cuban citizen you earn about $9 per month. Of course, this is above the table, and everyone does anything necessary, under the table, to survive. But for someone like myself from a consumer society, with everyone battling to accrue more money and more possessions, what's truly enlightening is that these people make $110 dollars per year and yet still can project so much happiness, color and life.
