A goodly number of eclectic characters prowl the sidestreets of Havana Vieja looking for foreigners to chat with and pose for in exchange for a pinch of foreign currency. In a country where the average citizen makes $9 per month and the government keeps rigid control on income, Cubans must augment their salaries any way they possibly can (but all under the radar, of course, lest they be punished). For example, only "official" taxis are allowed by the government to ferry people hither and thither, but it takes a gringo about 8 seconds to flag down any passing Ford Fairlane for a ride downtown for a covert tip.
