Driving one's self while touring Cuba is not the cheapest proposition. For a country teetering on the nail's head of economic survival, they don't give away rental cars, that's for sure. And in every little town you pass through, there are legions of people huddled under the overpasses, crammed onto corners trying to hitch a ride to work, back home, generally anywhere. I gave a ride to this police officer while taking a day trip, and by the time we reached his destination an hour later there was a Biblical deluge making it impossible to see 20 feet out the windshield. Armageddon-type rain, punishing. But without halting a beat he thanked me, hopped out the back and jogged off down the road - who knows how much further he had to go - could have been 10 yards or 10 kilometers. All in a day's work in Cuba.
