along the river in Arles, France, (and throughout most of the town) there is a sentinel of ornate streetlamps. i shot this sunset picture intending to silhouette the lamp - but the sky was fairly monotone. so the red glow in the top comes from a graduated filter (essentially, a filtering piece of glass or plastic, which goes from clear at the bottom to red at the top). these filters generally come in a range of 1 to 3 stops of tone at the top, and you can select from NO color (neutral density) to a whole rainbow of colors to place at the top. now you know the secret to good sunsets...
