castlewall, sunset, Marvao, Portugal back to EUROPE 2 gallery
after the official Europe Through the Back Door 2 part of the trip ended, i wandered on my own through Spain and Portugal a wee bit. i had no agenda, but as the days passed i ended up following a line of frontier fortresses along the east edge of Portugal - hilltop towns that supported a fort that protected Portugal's borders from Spain's aggressions. every night i'd relax in a bed and breakfast within the castle walls of another tiny fortress..this one happens to be Marvao. by sunset the handful of tourists had largely disappeared from these ruins, and i usually had them all to myself. now the only problem was finding someplace open to eat. as the twilight faded, manmade illumination set the castle walls aglow - this was VERY dim so a tripod was mandatory. (of course you can always create a fake tripod by setting your camera on a ledge or table and hitting the self-timer.)
