vineyard family, France back to EUROPE 2 gallery
Marc Remaury and his wife run an idyllic vineyard in the Provence region of France. on the Europe Through the Back Door tour, we spent part of a day lunching and wine-tasting at their rural oasis. the sun was GLARING down, so i knew our portrait had to be in the shade, out of the harsh light. generally, the light that falls on an object is softer and more flattering if it comes from a larger surface area than a point source. the light from a single point (like the sun, or a light bulb) is very contrasty and hard, and the shadows go VERY dark. the light from a larger area (like a window, softbox, or from clouds on a grey day) is much softer, has less harsh shadows, and is more forgiving on faces. SO i found a bright white wall of their house in the glaring sunshine, and directly opposite a shaded wall of leaves. i placed them in the shade, lit by the bright white wall, and the softness and lushness of the setting came alive.
