The border highway from Restauracion, Dominican Republic, down to Banica weaves in and out of the culturally, linguistically, and economically very different country of Haiti. The border crossings here are largely unmarked and untravelled by public transportation, as the road is dirt and scrappy a large portion of the way. We had to wait one day so we could hitch a ride the next day with the mail truck. When I say truck I do mean truck - a openbed pickup truck, packed with about 15 passengers. The few times we did stop on the Haitian side (once for a blown out tire in the middle of nowhere) we were greeted by the clearly impoverished and equally regal locals walking the road in the blasting sunlight.
