Unbeknownst to most Westerners, the swastika was an ancient and revered symbol throughout the Far and Middle East before the the Nazis usurped and tainted it. In a bucolic little cemetery in Nikko, this metal adornment provided surprising contrast with the handwritten 'ode to ancestors' which surrounded it.
