While wandering through the temple of Fuji-Sengen Jinja near the base of Mt. Fuji, this temple officiant was nice enough to explain to me the meaning of the stickers all over the wood beams (they're names of people, put there for good luck). When I bumbled into the inner sanctum, she was also nice enough to come scurrying after me with her arms in an X (the universal symbol for "you couldn't be doing something more offensive right now"). I was promptly ushered to safety.
