Behold: the majestic land crab! Before arriving on the island, I really had no idea the apocalyptic plague of these crustaceans I would encounter. They're everywhere!!! You ride your bicycle down the dirt path and you're parting a red sea of land crabs like a latter-day Moses. One day I slept in late and migrated to a plastic chair outside the hotel room (the hotel being an old concrete block military barracks) reading a book when the room cleaners came. The woman was in the tiny room not more than 2 minutes when a GIANT crab came flying over my head and landed in the shrubbery. The brave woman was used to throwing these things out of the rooms everyday. Apparently it had been inside foraging about all night in the darkness. We were probably spooning.
