A common food staple and temple offering is something called tsampa. Possessing roughly the consistency of marzipan, it's made of roasted flour mixed with salty butter tea. At the Mindroling temple I came upon a group of monks on the floor crafting the malleable matter into small "lamps" which would not be eaten but rather offered inside the temple to the Buddha. I joined the monks on the floor and attempted to make my own Fisher Price 'My First Tsampa' version of the mini-masterpieces they were creating. After a few moments, a monk to my right handed me his creation - a perfect life sized replica of my italian nose. (This is not the monk in the picture, mind you).
