I always smile at the sight of people using cellphones and being fashion forward while living in countries viewed from the outside as old world . It's like a geisha driving a Vespa. My expectation of Lhasa before I arrived was that it would be a wildland of dirt roads and anti-infrastructure, but the reality was very different. The Chinese occupation has transformed (and some would say bastardized) downtown Lhasa into a grid of wide well-paved streets and neon karaoke bars. Is this the inevitable march of modernity or a way of life forced on an unwilling people? Modern medicine and conveniences are certainly available, but free speech and freedom period is painfully absent.
