Tibetan custom holds that movement in a clockwise circle around holyplaces improves one's spiritual lot. Prayer wheels always spin clockwise and are adorned with mantras which upon every rotation are spun up to the heavens. Therefore, one of the holiest of spots in Tibet, the Dalai Lama's Potala Palace, sits upon a small hill which is continuously walked around (circumambulated) by pilgrims and locals alike. I didn't get a good shot of it but I saw numerous people completing the circle while prostrating themselves with every step. It must have taken days to complete such a grueling circuit.
